CAPRICA DVD Review

Esai Morales, Eric Stoltz - Caprica

CAPRICA, the prequel to Battlestar Galactica, was released today on DVD and Digital Download. Caprica a one hour and a half introduction to the series that will start in 2010 on the Sci Fi channel.

Originally, after watching the previews for Caprica, I wasn’t too excited to watch it. It just didn’t look like it would be that great, especially since it lacked some of the things I had come to love in Battlestar Galactica, the space element, the cylons, etc. But I was wrong, Caprica was able to totally capture my attention after the first five minutes, and now I am looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (executive producers of Battlestar Galactica) have done it again. But the great thing about Caprica is that it stands on its own as a series, meaning you don’t need to be a fan or have even seen Battlestar Galactica to enjoy it, while still being tied to Battlestar Galactica in ways that will please its fans.

Caprica follows the lives of Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) and Joseph Adama (Esai Morales) as they try to deal with the loss of their daughters.

During the movie, we find out more about what it was like to live on Caprica, and we of course find out more about the Adama family and where William Adama came from. In addition, we also see the beginning of the creation of what will become the cylon race.

Fans will of course also recognize some of the words and sentences that we have come to associate with Battlestar Galactica, life “Frak” and “So Say We All.” But I think the most interesting thing is how the concept of one true God, that we used to associate with Cylons is portrayed in the movie. It just gives this whole new dimension to the show.

And finally, I have to mention the brilliant character development as well as performances by the cast. Battlestar Galactica was known for its great storylines, but also for some powerful acting, and we find that again in Caprica. You definitely feel the touch of Ronald D. Moore and David Eick on Caprica, and I think this movie sets up a pretty great foundation for the series.

So I say that if you enjoy compelling stories and great acting, you will definitely enjoy Caprica.

The cast of Caprica includes Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson, Alessandra Toreson, Magda Apanowicz, Avan Jogia, and Polly Walker.

You can buy Caprica on Amazon.

I would agree, it is worth checking out whether you were a fan of Battlestar Galacitca or not. Although, if you were, Caprica is for those that were more interested in the storylines and great characters than the big battles in space. If the latter was the main reason you watched Galactica, then Caprica probably won’t be for you.

Yes, that’s very true Jason. The whole space aspect is not in Caprica, so some fans might not enjoy it as much, but at the same time others (non-space fans) might enjoy it more :-)
It’s definitely going to be an interesting show to watch in 2010.

I had the exact reaction to this introductory episode that I had to the Felicity series. My teeth hurt and my skin itched. Oh, look, it’s 1930s America! Well, except for the pretty tech. And the fact that in the whole Caprican language there seems to be only one swear word. Her parents were playing TENNIS. And she was a very nearly psycho brat, self-absorbed and if she’s what the Cylons inherited their resentment from, it’s no wonder.

The people writing this show tend to have a “Let’s make it up as we go along” mentality.
