ABC’s LIFE ON MARS Cancelled

Jason O' Mara

Yep, it’s official, ABC’s LIFE ON MARS has been cancelled.

The good news is that the advanced notice to the producers of Life on Mars will allow them to prepare a series finale instead of a season finale.

I have a few thoughts about this one actually:

1) I can’t say that I am surprised.

2) I still have a few episodes to catch up on, so Life On Mars will go on for a little longer for me at least.

3) I wonder if the series finale will draw on the series finale of the original British show, Life on Mars.

How about you guys? How do you feel about this new cancellation?

I am so livid! I can’t believe they are cancelling this show–it is so well acted and the stories are great. What is ABC thinking? Did they hire NBC executives to make their decision? I am so bummed, they always seem to cancel the best shows and leave on the stupid, dumb ones. Geez.

  • sue george

this was a great show. I hate to see them cancel it and probably replace it with another crap reality show. running out of things to watch. I hate reality shows

  • David

I watched the UK version of which this show was taken. The British version was SOOOO much better, the US one seemed like a cheap immatation that probably cost more!

Don’t understand why they try and change something for the US audience when the original was so good in the first place. So many shows are stolen from the UK and then changed to fit a US audience and it only makes good television bad.

Sorry to disagree with some above but after having seen the original this sucked!

  • http://daemonstv.com Sandie

I think you’re right David. Although I did enjoy “Life on Mars” the US version, I felt the best episodes were the ones taken from the British version. There is no comparison the British Life on Mars was way better.

And I was also totally thinking the other day how they always change UK shows for the worse, and then when it doesn’t work they wonder why.

My wife and I are so disappointed! It’s a great great show all around with great acting and script. I hope they reconsider

  • Sheila PEace

I can’t compare to the British version since I haven’t seen it. However, my entire family of 4 absolutely loved it. It grabbed the attention of my 11 and 16 year olds, as well as my husband and myself. It was brilliantly acted and successfully mixed drama, comedy and 70′s nostalgia for truly one of the most enjoyable and intriguing shows ever. The fact that it was dropped by ABC is no surprise. They must all be grade school dropouts.

I too am very disapoined in this cancellation. LOM was a show that had something a lot of shows don’t have…many aspects to draw different viewsers.

For me, clearly it’s the amwesome sets, mind blowing much that paints the scenes like they really are in 1973. Aesthetically, only Lost comes close to selling the feel like LOM does/did.

I was really hoping for a 2-3 year, “hey, it’s a trippy story that we can pull some more interest in type series…

Like I said, LOM could be watched by someone who is a fan of the actors…a fan of the 70′s (the music the clothes the lingo)…a fan who likes cop shows…especially old cop shows….as well as the sci-fi people.

The title is what throws the moronic american (intentionally using a lowercase letter “a”) who howl at shows like Two and a Half Men.

If you didn’t find yourself singin’ along to one of the songs on LOM, I get you may not feel the show. I wasn’t even a live the peroid of time this show takes place but I still am there with almost all the perfectly picked selections for music.

  • Eric

I am very bummed too. Good storyline and acting. I think perhaps the name of the show wasn’t able to get people interested….many dingbats out there may have thought it was some sort of way-out sci-fi show taking place on Mars.

  • LeeAnn

I can’t believe it!!!! We look forward every week for Life on Mars and now they are taking it away from us. Doesn’t make any sense. Bring it back!! I am so disappointed!!!!!

  • Bob

I can’t believe there cancelling Life on Mars. I so look forward to watching this show every week. The cast is great ! I too love going back to the seventies. What is wrong with these people. They are idiots !

  • LacieLu82

WTF is ABC’s problem?? This was a great show! The cast was great and it was very well acted…this sucks!! Jason Omara is fabulous and it was nice to see Michael Imperioli back on the screen…he’s such a great actor. I’m bummed…

  • http://accountingr@ibm.com Godbless our troops

gawd damn you just cannot let yourself get hooked on programs anymore because ABC is a Rating whore and good shows are hard to come by. I love this show but unfortunate we live in a time where every body watches meaningless show like “dancing with the stars” WTF I might as well watch paint dry on a wall…..

  • Mitch K

DAMN. One of my favorite shows gone??? AGAIN??? This is agony. ABC is a bunch of morans

  • teresa

Abc i am so disappointed in you. LOM was the best new show on tv. I was a teen in the 70s. This show really brought back memories and the music was the best. You are making a big mistake cancelling this show. Especially when more people in this economy are staying home, and want to take a reality break from their lives. You cancel it. Maybe we should boycott your network. Earth to ABC.

  • Dave

I am not surprised. We are lucky to get 5 episodes before the networks panic or lose interest and drop a show. Ironically, 5 episodes now make up half a “season,” too. We, the audience, no longer get offered quality shows versus quality episodes. Character development, deep backstories, and themes that transcend many episodes are sacrificed for a quick story that starts and ends in one night. Net works have given up on the idea that they can recapture America’s undevided attention (even with TIVO) and have moved toward the idea that they will capture us periodically for a few weeks, and then let us go dry for the next couple months with reruns. In short, this was a great show, but it had too much “work” for the networks to handle – it just needed time.

  • derek

ABC is by far the worst network out there. they cancel shows left and right- i agree with some of the earlier posts that ABC is a ratings whore. i don’t even like starting new shows anymore, because they will be inexplicably cancelled within a season (or two). i say we boycott ABC and switch to cable networks. they seem to be the ones that give their shows a decent amount of time.

  • Phyllis

Here we go again, another good Police show and they take it off the air. Not sure if any of you remember a show called Brooklyn South that was another nypd cop show that was so real and they canned it years ago. My husband and I moved from Long Island Ny in 2001, He retired after doing 9 years in Brooklyn North and then came to Florida and is a deputy down here. It ticks me off when they have such good shows that are so realistic and then they get canned. The thing about LIfe on Mars is that My uncle was a street cop and then a detective in Jamacia queens for years He did over 25 years on the force. The funny thing is that Life on Mars was truly how it was back then. He would tell us stories and its funny Because Harvey Keitel makes the perfect fit for SGT or LT back then. That is how the job used to be back then. It is so dissappointing to see it go, but at least they gave them time to put the ending together. I am really sad to see it go.

  • Dawna Bennett

That’s it. I am so done with network television. Do those morons out there who watch reality shows know that the reality shows are not real? They are so scripted, edited and rewritten.
I know that people want to end their day with something mindless before they go to sleep, but what about people like us who want to watch something truly entertaining. I guess we are stuck with National Georgraphic channel. Network can’t seem to stimulate our brains. I can’t believe a show like, LOM was cancelled, yet that brainless and whinny show, Brothers and Sisters stays on the air. Nighttime soap opeara. If I wanted to experience that misery, I could just phone my sisters!!

  • Aaron S

I can’t believe that ABC is cancelling another good show. Who is running that network??? They take a great show with a smart twist, put together an excellent cast, then bury the show at the Wed 10:00 spot and wonder why their ratings arent better. I’m sure they’ll find some crap reality show about c-list stars learning to dance, while losing weight, all while on a desert island fighting for immunity. Can’t wait.

  • Lori Pascuale

I love this show, I’m truly saddened to lose Sam Tyler.

  • Erica

We agree! My wife and I love this show! We just wrote ABC to beg them to give this show a chance! Great show, great soundtrack, great actors, great everything!

  • Anthony

LOM was not only the best new show of the season, but was one of the top 5 shows on TV, PERIOD! No wonder why ABC sucks, the talking heads have sold out quality for reality crap and instant gratification! I grew up in the 70′s and was the son of an NYPD Detective. The reality of this show was incredible with acting and cinematography to match. It reminds me of all the reasons why I became a NYC cop in 1985. My only hope is to organize a campaign to bring it back and put it on HBO where it would truly flourish. Come on Michael Imperioli, use your HBO contacts and bring it home !

  • David

What fascinates me about this is the fact that this show bites the bullet when shows like Heroes survive. Some shows are great. Some shows are good (that’s where I’d put Mars). Some shows are worth watching. And some shows make me mad every time I waste an hour watching them. The worst of the worst are the ones that were great once, and now just make me mad. Like Heroes. This show kept me tuning in week after week and got me caring about the characters and the story and wanting to know what the reason for all this stuff was, and it’s gone. Heroes goes on. Someone explain this to me.

  • Frank Crescioni

So disappointed. Such and interesting premise and such as well acted show. The chemistry between Sam and Annie was my favorite on TV. I was really looking forward to that blooming romance and a potential love triangle with Sam’s present-time fiancee Maya. It would had been fascinating to see Sam go through that struggle. In any case, I will remain huge fans of Jason O’Mara and Gretchen Mol and may actually check out the British version.

  • http://aol lesley

I love this show. I am very disappointed they are going to can it already. They find something a little different and written well and then let if go?! Makes no sense to me.

  • Rita Fratto

Tell me ain’t so. I love this show. I was 22 in 1973, I graduated college that year and I so enjoyed this show. I love the characters etc. Shameful that they won’t give it more time. Could someone please explain to me why shows do not get full seasons. ABC stopped showing it and than resumed it a couple of months later. How in God’s name do they expect folks to stay with a show..and to repeat what David said in another post, I have come to care about these characters. Go figure..

  • http://Daemon'sTV Rich Olmstead

First Boston Public, now life on Mars. That’s a long time between new shows I actually watch. Same fate for each show. I guess something must be wrong with “ME”.

  • Rob in Kansas

I am sickened that ABC is canceling my FAVORITE FRIGGIN TV SHOW. ABC is mostly crap—–batchelor crud, dancing crud…….for goodness sakes can’t we just have ONE decent show on ABC? The person in charge there obviously has NO taste.

  • Rob in Kansas

Everyone NEEDS to write to ABC and let them know what we think of their decision to cancel Life on Mars at the address below:

    http://abc.go.com/site/contactus.html

  • Derek Harris

This just brings broader awareness of the crack epidemic that plagues all walks of life including tv network excecutives, because somebody had to be smokin’ that s#@t before making this decision! LOM had the same quality of the classic shows we had to choose from in the 70′s, you know, the kind they don’t make anymore. Then again I am really not shocked, this coming from ABC.Remember who we are talking about here. I mean the last show I thought had any quality and I watched on a regular basis on ABC was 3′s company and you know how long ago that was. I guess it’ll be another 30years before we get another with that same quality like LOM. Thank god for cable stations like tv land where we still have access to the classics like the Gunsmokes and Sanford and Sons, the All in the Families and the Bonanzas!

  • Derek Harris

To Rob in Kansas: Good lookin’ out on that link to ABC dawg!! I used it with the quickness and left ABC a “colorful”discription of my opinion of the decision as well as the network. I IMPLORE EVERYONE TO DO THE SAME!!!!

  • Julie

Oh I am crushed over the cancellation of Life on Mars. I loved it the 1st time I saw it. The cast is perfect for the parts they are playing. I used to watch “Lost” just because I knew “Life on Mars” was next…forget it now, my TV won’t be coming on Wednesday evenings. The cancellation of this show is just a sign of the times to me. I guess this show requires too much wit for the everyday viewer. BUT THATS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT. NO NUTS, Tom Cruise, Det. Skywalker and so many others. :(

  • Mike

It is very typical that a show that requires a little thought, imagination and intelligence gets cancelled while more and more moronic “reality” shows continue to fourish and earn more than one season. The executives at ABC are spoon-feeding what they feel will bring in ratings-non-thinking, economical to produce mindless garbage reality crap. If possible, a boycott of this ridiculus network is in order.

  • maddog

This show had its problems from the very first episode. I’m sorry, but Harvey Keitel is now too old to play the overbearing police squad leader. It’s embarrassing to watch him wheeze through his lines and struggle with the physical action requirements. Secondly, Michael Imperioli was cast as the peer on the squad who is always giving Detective Sam Tyler a hard time. Unfortunately, as he displayed in his earlier role on “The Sopranos”, Michael’s niche is not tough guy, but bad guy with a heart (albeit a conflicted, wavering psychopath). Sure, ABC can afford the rights to the great 70′s music that the BBC obviously could not afford. But you run into problems right away when the original UK series was planned as a one-season-only presentation, and everything on the American “telly” is initially planned to run for years.

  • babe

Of course!!! reality shows are far better than these show. net work TV think we are stupid.
I know sooooo many people who always have negative comments on these stupid reality shows ut they freakin watch them! we are all stupid. we can’t learn to like stories. instead we enjoy other people’s problems.

  • anita

i think cancelling this show is stupid…i love it, so enjoyable and fun to watch…These networks always keep the shit shows on and take away the good ones…They have to make up there friggin minds…I hate that they did this…stupid people…haha

  • holly

So Annie FINALLY tells Sam she has feelings for him…and we wrap things up next week. What a load of crap, ABC. You ask us to watch, to get invested, and then when we do, you pull the rug out from under us. This is the best new show in years, a brilliant combination of NYPD Blue meets Barney Miller. Guess it’s asking to much to see something through. Sam and Annie deserve better…and so do we.

  • Nelson Oropesa

Great show, hate to see it go away. The visual was so real, that you would think it was really shot back in 1973. The charactors are perfect in every way. Bye, to Life on Mars

  • http://MSN Judith

I love this program. I was thunderstruck when I saw it was being taken off. Maybe it’s because it’s very creative and a thinking person’s program. It stirs the imagination. I don’t think network tv allows that. It was really interesting watching the quirkiness balanced by the cop-type drama. Makes me think that maybe that commercial about tv turning our brains to mush isn’t far off the truth. Thanks Rob for that address – email to ABC next on the list.

  • Colleen M

Great show. Loved the characters. Loved the music. Brought back good memories. I will truly miss it.

  • Elaine C.

Will miss Life on Mars. It had a good cast, good music, very entertaining, the weekly guest stars were enjoyed also. Was also a fan of the British version of Life on Mars.

  • Rita

I have posted before but after watching this last episode I am truly bummed even more about the cancellation. Now I realize the show wasn’t meant to go on amd on but at least give it one full season at the same day, same time. Life… was on and than they replaced it with something else so it disappeared and than gave it a new time slot and and. It deserved a chance to last one FULLLLLLLLLLL season..

  • Terry

One of the best show’s on ABC lately has been cancelled, as far as I’m concerned. I was watching Heroes before it became ridiculous, and I’m quickly losing interest in Lost. And what’s with all the goofy reality shows–do people really like all that phoney trash? Life on Mars wasn’t great, but it was one of the only shows worth watching every week. Too bad!

  • Aidelina

I am getting so sick of watching TV I get so much into a show and then they go ahead and cancel it. I love Life on Mars I always look forward to watching the show on Thursday.Like other posted they will go and cancel the show to put a bad show or a reality show.I am so sick of reality shows. Life on Mars is abreathe of fresh air and I love the storylines and the cast they are great actors. Wow this is so terrible.

  • rae

this is a nitemare i love these guys i think the acting is superb love sam and no nuts get rid of samantha who and keep life on mars please

  • RIC WOODS

I AGREE WITH SO MANY; I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED THE SERIES AND WOULD LOVE ABC TO BRING IT BACK THIS FALL.

  • Gail

I just heard the awful news. I love this show and I am IN LOVE with “Chris.” He looks just like my husband did 38 years ago. I looked forward to seeing him each week and getting those little butterflies!! I’m going to miss him.

  • keystonecop

I am sooo disappointed that LOM is being cancelled. As a member of the livlihood that employs Sam, it truly is a refreshing story about the levity and seriousness of police work. CSI et al is not realistic at all. You know how police solve their crimes? they gumshoe and talk with people. Even tho this is 2009, the old methods of talking and hitting the streets to get answers is what gets the job done. LOM has a great cast and a great balance of drama and comedy. i don’t even get too lost as to why Sam is where he is. I just go for the ride and enjoy the hour. Guess i will be returning to HBO and Showtime. shame on you ABC!!!! :(

  • http://Daemon'sTV Sue

This is a great show with wonderful actors and a good storyline. Shame on you ABC for cancelling it. Not all of us are fans of your stupid “reality” shows.

  • B. mac

    It’s probably too late but here’s a petition: http://tvseriesfinale.com/articles/life-on-mars-petition-to-continue-the-abc-tv-show/
You can a least let ABC know how you feel by signing it!
