DEAD LIKE ME: LIFE AFTER DEATH – DVD Review

After years of waiting, the day has finally come, the Dead Like Me movie, DEAD LIKE ME: LIFE AFTER DEATH, is finally here, and I had to watch it. The series was tragically cancelled by Showtime in 2004, and of course I was very excited when I heard the news that there was going to be a movie. So now that I have seen it, what do I think?

Well, let me just start by the negative points. Rube was my favorite character in Dead Like Me, and to not have him in the movie, was definitely sad. Also, changing the actress who portrays Daisy Adair was a big mistake in my opinion. Laura Harris owned the part and if they couldn’t get her, they should have just brought in a new character. Not that I have anything against Sarah Wynter, who took over that part, but every time she was on screen I found myself wishing it was Laura Harris instead, and couldn’t really get into the character that much. That was a big shame because I loved the Mason/Daisy dynamic, but it didn’t work for me in the movie.

But now on to the good parts, the rest of the cast is back, that means George (Ellen Muth), Mason (Callum Blue), Roxy (Jasmine Guy), Reggie (Britt McKillip), Joy (Cynthia Stevenson), and of course Delores (Christine Willes). But that’s not all, since Rube is gone, the team needed a new leader, and that’s where Henry Ian Cusick comes in. Some of you know him better as Desmond Hume from Lost, but in Dead Like Me: Life After Dead, he is Cameron Kane, the new boss. And while I love Henry Ian Cusick (and Desmond), I can’t say that I am too fond of Cameron. Let’s just say he’s not a very nice guy.

So now that we know who’s back, what about the story?
I personally enjoyed the story. Was it the best they could have come up with? Maybe not, but I think that’s mostly due to the fact that Rube wasn’t there, it sort of changed what they could do with the characters. However, what I did love is that you do see all the characters growing. And the story actually does give you closure for Dead Like Me. Now of course, the show could go on if it was up to me, but I am very satisfied by the way it ended and I think fans of the show will appreciate it very much.

Overall, I think that if you were a fan of the show, this is a must-see, if only to see how it ends. Plus I’m sure fans will get a kick out of seeing George, Mason and Roxie back in action.
