Review: STARGATE ATLANTIS (5×01) – “Search and Rescue” Part Two

I just finished watching the screener of the first episode of Season Five of STARGATE ATLANTIS “Search and Rescue – Part Two”. Here is what I thought of the episode:

The Good
It’s good to see the team back in action. Last season’s finale is somewhat quickly taken care of at the beginning and we move into the nitty-gritty of the “Rescue” part of the episode. Overall, there was decent action and an interesting story line for the episode (except for the end but we will get to that in a little bit)

The Bad
Rodney is still a whiny little ….OK, I actually like the character but the writers need to grow him a little bit and stop him whining so much. I am sure that even the actor David Hewlett would appreciate some dialogue change.

The Ugly
Ok, I don’t want to give away the end so I will save my full blown rant for myself. But I just want to say one thing….If you are a fan of Sam Carter, the end will be a huge shocker. When I saw it, I thought to myself: “Really? Are you kidding me?”. Any thoughts from you guys would be welcome because I am at a lack for words.

Overall, an interesting episode. Mostly for the last few minutes. Next episode should prove even more compelling.

Judging from googling, many fans have seen it via a leaked screener copy that went to the net

I suppose in retrospect fans should be happy they didn’t kill carter or turn her into a replicator (like, alas, with Weir). Tapping had a choice of producing/starring in “Sanctuary” or doing a few minutes each week on SGA; she wisely chose the former as it will bolster her career far more.

I’m amazed that so many people are shocked by Tapping’s decision and how it was handled by the writers of SGA. I’m very much looking forward to Woolsey joining up, mostly to see just how quickly he has to change his own personal ‘operating manual’ (or, more correctly, how fast the Pegasus Galaxy changes it FOR him). Weir the Negotiator had to change her view of things in short order; no doubt Woolsey the Assessor will have his eyes opened up just as quickly.

And Rodney isn’t whiney. He may wear the black & use the P-90 but he’s still that non-socialized geek he’s always been. Wouldn’t have him any other way.

I am pretty upset about the whole Carter thing. First they brought her on to replace Weir. Not happy about that, but then to have her be gone after one season..???!!!! Please! Okay and to make it worse- WOOLSEY! The guy has never liked the Stargate program, why would they put him in charge of and entire Galaxy Operation…? I think I am about doen with SGA.
