MOONLIGHT Review – “Fleur de Lis” (1×9)

This last episode of CBS’ MOONLIGHT “Fleur de Lis” was interesting to say the least.

The thing about loving a show is that it doesn’t prevent you from criticizing it once in while, so here are a few things that didn’t make sense to me in Moonlight‘s last episode “Fleur de Lis”:

At first I thought Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon) had a tattoo of a fleur de lis, but turns out she was actually branded. So now there is one thing that doesn’t make sense to me: When Mick (Alex O’Loughlin) was chasing her in the graveyard and saw she didn’t have a tattoo and then we realized that she put some make-up on it, wouldn’t he have noticed the burn anyway? I am not convinced make-up would be enough to conceal the brand.

Coraline is a human now?… I am a little skeptical about this storyline because it seems like the writers dug themselves a hole with that one. I am curious to find out what explanation they will come up with, but I have a feeling it’s not going to live up to my expectations. It’s probably going to be one of those “oh that’s their explanations?!” Let’s be positive for a moment and hope that the writers surprise us.

Mick makes out with Coraline – I’m sorry but don’t you hate her? Didn’t she ruin your life? I guess men stay men when it’s about sex, even when they’re vampires…

How about some positive:

Josef (Jason Dohring) was in the episode, that’s always a plus.

Beth (Sophia Myles) doing the voice over… interesting.

Beth stabbing Coraline – you go girl!

Finally I was just wondering what happened to Beth’s fiancee? Not that I like to see him, but if they’re going to cut him out at least give us a resolution between Beth and him.

Overall it was a good episode definitely left me wanting for more, that’s why it’s so upsetting that there will be no new episode this Friday. How will I survive without Moonlight?

Well…they haven’t revealed exactly When she was branded -if it was post transformation, it’s entirely possible that the burn could heal but the design wouldn’t — they’ve already recreated some of the vampire mythology as is.

Also, it would depend on the method of the branding — it’s not always a cattle jab. I’ll say this though, the detail of the fleur is a tad too exquisite for a branding, but whatever —

Part 3 — she’s an old old old vamp, it’s perfectly conceivable that she has some kind of mental control of her appearance, or at least how others perceive it —that combined with makeup could pretty much cover up any disfigurement

Anyway…as much as I’m digging this show, I’m surprised Joss hasn’t sued — this is so Angel/Darla that it’s out of control

Gah, I’m definitely gonna have to rewatch this episode again, but I’m pretty sure the whole branding scene was *Beth’s* assumption of what happened. Hopefully the tattoo will be explained in an upcoming episode and not lost in the cracks with the writers’ strike.

I’ve read some spoilers..the whole “Coraline as a human” has my interest completely piqued.

I guess I’m one of the apparent few that doesn’t hate Coraline that much. Mick has a lot of unresolved history/feelings for her, so it’s not surprising (to me, anyway) that he might feel conflicted about/attracted to Coraline.

I’ve got to say when I first heard about Coraline I thought, what an evil vampire bitch turning him like that on the wedding night. Now after seeing more of the background story I feel sorry for her, just a little and can also see how Mick fell for her. When he met Coraline she seemed depressed/sad and jadded about life and men. She met a human and fell for him, she came to love his love for her, treating her as valuable, special unique.

I now see that for her the wedding night turning was for her the ultimate wedding gift, showing just how much she loved him and wanted to be with him forever. She just didnt count on how repugniant (sp) it would be for Mick. That shocked her but she hung in there thinking it would change. It seemed for a while it did but then he tried unsuccessfully for years to break it off.

BTW I think it was Josph at her place when Mick came over for a date.

As Morgan you see a funny, quirky, sexy, outrageous woman who would be appealing to many men. Morgan/Coraline was a woman who had developed a talent and passion for photography, a career for herself and that was also different from the old Coraline.

Over the course of this episode you see Coraline falling in love with Mick, not just obsessing. She sees him as a mature, confident, no nonsense vamp who has also found a career which he is good at and a style of his own. He is now is own vamp/man. Added to that the fact he saved her life and at one point explained “anyone is capable of murder given the right circumstances”. She seemed to get it.

Enough of this, lets all watch blood ties until the next episode comes out!

I have read spoilers also and am very intriged by how the writers will work all this out. I also read alot of “modern” vamp novels and writers have been playing with the mythology quite a bit in the past few years. It’s totally believable. Most of what “humans” think of as vampire lore is just mythology so it’s all good.
